Jonathan's Mineral Exchange

My journey: How a sparked interest became a dedication and passion for fine mineral specimens!

I had been seeking a diversion from the challenges and pressure of managing a small computer business, if only for a couple of hours a day. After sampling a few different interests, I was introduced to mineral collecting by a fortunate accident. I took my family to the Natural Stone Bridge and Caves Park in Pottersville, NY and we all marveled at the natural beauty or the caves and the deposits that formed. We spend some time in their “Artisan” or Rock Shop and the display of mineral specimens and geodes sparked my interest.
 

That summer I noticed a curious add by an Australian opal miner offering opals for sale during his stay. Susan King notable artisan and jewlery maker who was also the Montreal Gem and Mineral Club show coordinator, happened to be there as well. She told me about the existence of mineral clubs and shows and then I looked into it myself. . It was easy to get hooked into such a nice hobby that combines outdoor activity, social contacts and camaraderie as well as accumulation of knowledge. As time passed, I became a passionate albeit temporary custodian and curator of an ever growing number of ‘wonders of nature’, fine mineral specimens in their original unaltered form.
 

My collection, now stands in the thousands.  Specimens range from a few giants to thousands of miniatures, thumbnails and micro mounts included.  Approximately half of the fine minerals specimens were self collected while the other half consist of both exchanges and purchases.
 

Early on, I realized that I couldn’t dig out all that I sought. Thus I never hesitated in purchasing specimens to fill the gaps. This put me in good relations with many dealers.  Thanks to their help and encouragement, I started offering my extras to other collectors, so that all interesting specimens could find a good home.  My special interest is Canadian mineralogy and world wide Garnets. Thus at Jonathan’s Mineral Exchange very fine mineral specimens from Canada as well as many world localities are available.

My daughter Tanya and son Yuri help out me with various Mineral and Gem shows, held throughout the year:
(In March) Peterborough, Ontario; (In April) Rochester Mineralogical Symposium; (In May)The Canadian Micromounters Symposium; (In August) Bancroft Ontario Gemboree; and Springfield Mass. East cost mineral show; (In November) The Montreal Gem and Mineral show; (In December) Tokyo Ikebukuro Mineral Show.
